"Odysseus, man of exploits,
still eager to leave at once and hurry back
to your own home, your beloved native land?
Good luck to you, even so. Farewell!
But if you only knew, down deep, what pains
are fated to fill your cup before you reach that shore,
you’d stay right here, preside in our house with me
and be immortal. Much as you long to see your wife"( Book 5, lines 224-231)
This is where Callypso makes her final statement to Odysseus. She promises to stop him from having to face future sadness that will overtake him and give him immortality. But Odysseus does not care for. All he cares for is his home and wife. Calypso’s statement creates tension to begin the homeward journey. He wants to see his wife and home again, but he also wants all the tempting things Calypso has to offer. This shows how much Odysseus really wants to go home, he is willing to give up immortality to return to his family.
